Copy / Paste in the Windows Command Line with ctrl-c / ctrl-v

Back in 2010 I was very tired of always having to right click to paste in the command/powershell window. I was just learning AutoIt, so I thought I’d make a little applet in that to make life a little easier for myself.

This is one of my most used and favorite applets. I have it running on every PC I use. It was written for XP and I continue to use it in Win7. I haven’t tried it in any other versions of Windows.

Note that you’ll probably see the menus of the command prompt flash when you use any of the functions. This isn’t a bug: the app uses them to do the actual copying, pasting and other functions.

Usage:

The commands have expanded a little since 2010. I might update it further if anyone cares. When a command Window is active:

• ctrl-c will copy selected text
• ctrl-v will paste
• ctrl-w will close the command window
• ctrl-↑/↓ arrow will scroll one line up or down
• ctrl-page up/page down will scroll one page up or down

Use it at your own risk. There’s almost no error checking in it. Not that there’s much that could go wrong.  That said, I offer neither warranties nor guarantees that it’ll work with anything except my own PCs.

This app is written in AutoIt 3. It is virus free and malware free. However, since it is written in AutoIt, some AV scanners flag it as a false positive. When run through VirusTotal on 10/29/2019, nearly all AV engines found it to be clean. See the reports here (x86) and here (x64).
